The Diary Of Jane Margret

Dear diary,
Today I witnessed a crime; I was in Miss Eleanor’s garden watering her plants, when I heard a deafening scream for help. I was so startled that I dropped my watering can. I walked into the kitchen only to find Miss Eleanor crying at her counter and her front door broken.
I asked Miss Eleanor what happened and she explained how three men had broken in.
“Miss, can you describe them for me please?” I said
“Oh well i-it’s not important” she shouted
“The important thing is that they broke my property”
I told her that I could go get the constable but she said it was not important enough (which is quite confusing because Miss Eleanor always thinks that every little thing is important).

Dear diary,
Today I was curious about what happened yesterday so I decided to investigate further. I was cleaning Miss Eleanor's dressing table and I found a letter with a beautiful burgundy stamp on the front. I carefully unsealed the envelope and read it out;
“To my dearest daughter Eleanor,
It has come to my attention that your sister has gone off to school; and she spent her whole allowance on her custom gowns. So essentially I am asking you to-”
Miss Eleanor found me reading and told me to go and think about my manners. Luckily tomorrow is my holy day so I don't have to go to work. My husband Robert is coming back from the war tomorrow too.

Dear diary,
…today is the day that I die; yesterday after the argument I had with Miss Eleanor, she fell dreadfully sick a-and now they think I’m a witch. I will keep this short but if you find this in the future please return this to Miss Eleanor near the oak tree. Goodbye.
(someone in fact did find the book 2 days after the incident and gave it to Miss Eleanor.)

Dear diary,
Today I was given a diary and I honestly didn't know what to do with it until I read the title it said
“The diary of Jane Margret”
If you don’t know who that is, that was my awful housemaid, also a WITCH who tried to curse me by making me ill after we had an argument. I immediately cleaned my hands (who knows what filth she has). Of course I started to read it, obviously who doesn't read a diary when they get the chance.

Dear diary,
Today I heard a knock at my door. I opened it only to find a short figure that looked like it had come back from the dead.
“Hello, can I help you!” I said sharply
“Let me in.” it said
I stepped aside; it suddenly ran into my room, I chased it in but when I went to get it, it was gone.

Dear diary,
You probably won't believe me but I Jane Margret am still alive!
So basically what happened was they were tying my neck to the rope to hang me. I felt my eyes falling shut but suddenly I just woke up in my grave and eventually dug myself out, except I don't look like I did before; I am now just a short figure in the darkness of the night. Ever since I supposedly died I have been wondering about the note that Miss Eleanor would not let me read;as soon as I got the chance I ran into Miss Eleanor's room and searched for it. It said:
“To my dearest daughter Eleanor,
It has come to my attention that your sister has gone off to school; and she spent all her allowance on her custom gowns. So essentially I am asking you to find a way for that housemaid of yours to leave and give us all her money. I think you should fake an illness so that when she gets accused of being a witch. We can get all her inheritance to ourselves.
Yours sincerely, your father.”
SHE WAS FAKING IT TO GET ME KILLED SO SHE COULD GET MY INHERITANCE!

Dear diary,
I needed to find out more about yesterday so I snuck back into Miss Eleanor’s room and opened the drawer; next to the note was another note that said:
“Dear Eleanor,
We faked a break in at your house like you said, can we have our
money now. Also we managed to distract that housemaid of yours while father snuck the note into your drawer that will be another ten shillings.
From: William and John, your two marvelous brothers.”
So she had her whole family in on it as well. I need to tell someone but how I have no money and no one will know it's me as well as the fact they will report me to the constable if they realise I didn't die.

Dear diary,
Today I was walking around the village just before dawn and I came across a clothes shop. I went inside and saw the most marvelous cloak; there was no one at the counter so I just put the money down and left. As I was walking out it hit me, I could now look like a normal human being. When I finally got to the constable it was almost midnight. I showed them the notes and pretended I was just one of Eleanor's friends who had stumbled across it.
The man's face went white.
“Ok mam from the evidence you have given us we will be able to bring her to the magistrate and charge her for perjury.”
(Jane was acquitted and Eleanor was sentenced to branding so now everyone she met would know she was a liar)

Dear diary,
Now I have inherited all of my money back and I no longer work for Miss Eleanor. I am now working on a farm and I will retire soon as I have made more money than I need. And I have my own horse now so I don't have to walk everywhere anymor
